If you have ever been on a trip hiking, then you must recall the awesome elation you felt upon encountering a spectacular view. It’s just unfortunate that the photos you took with your smartphone didn’t quite capture the moment as remembered. This time around you should get yourself acquitted with digital photography. You will have a fantastic time snapping away and at the end have countless priceless photos to make your trip truly unforgettable.
Getting the Right camera
Digital cameras look pretty much like the more traditional cameras on the outside. However, a digital camera would offer you way more functionality compared to its traditional counterpart. But to get the right camera for your needs, you need first to get familiar with the technical specifics of digital cameras. The main technical specifications of digital cameras are:-
This term refers to the ability of the camera to capture the minutest details as seen in the photograph that you take with it. Digital cameras principally work by dividing up the scene to be photographed into miniscule sections known as pixels. A photograph is more detailed if it has a high pixel density. A high pixel density makes it possible for you to zoom in on any part of the photo without it blurring.
As a general rule, the higher the resolution of a camera, the greater the number of pixels making up the photographs it takes, hence the more detailed the photos. Although very high-resolution cameras can be quite pricy, it is possible to purchase 2 to 3-megapixel cameras at a reasonable price.
In place of the traditional roll of film, digital cameras store the photos taken in the form of data files. These data files are located in a digital camera’s internal memory, which rarely exceeds 8 megabytes. This memory is quite small if you intend to take high-resolution photos while on your trip as it can only hold 4 or 5 photos. You would, therefore, need to expand your camera’s internal memory by purchasing a memory card. If you happen to have an extra micro sd card for your phone, then you can use a memory card adapter to fit the memory card to the camera.
A memory card adapter would afford you the convenience of switching memory cards between your smartphone and camera while on the trip. It would be simply awesome to upload your high-resolution photos to your Instagram, Whatsapp, Facebook, or other social media account. An additional benefit of a removable memory card is that you can move the photos to your computer once the card fills up. A 256MB memory card should allow you to take a reasonable number of high-resolution photos and would, therefore, be a good starting point.
c. Picture Mode
Picture mode refers to the various ways in which the digital camera can take a photo or succession of photos. Most digital camera will offer three standard modes which are:
- Time delay mode
This feature is quite handy when you want to take a wide-angle photo of yourself with no one else around. This mode allows you to set a time delay between the moment to press the shutter button and the time the camera takes the photo. However, to properly make use of this mode, you would also need to purchase a tripod stand for your camera.
Then all you need to do is mount the camera on its tripod stand, set the delay, and then walk over to your chosen spot in front of the camera. It is relatively easy to get used to using this picture mode, and within no time, you would be able to capture stunning images of yourself in a setting of your choice.
- Burst/ Rapid Fire Mode
This feature allows you to take several pictures in a row, which can be great for capturing the image of an object in motion. For instance, the Rapid-fire mode would be great for capturing spectacular photos of an eagle in flight or a deer in fright. This mode can also come in handy when you want to take multiple photos of the same scene from different angles.
- Landscape Mode
This feature is a later addition to digital cameras, and it allows you to take a wide perspective photograph in one single shot. With the landscape mode enabled, it is possible to take a photo with a 270o view from a single location. Amazing images can be captured with this mode.
